The Overthinking Society

An ACT-Based Anxiety and Resilience Group for Girls Who Think About Everything

Do you replay conversations in your head? Worry about things that happened last week? Think through every possible outcome before making a decision? Feel embarrassed about things that nobody else seems to remember?

You're not alone.

The Overthinking Society is a psychologist-led group for girls who think about everything. They replay conversations, worry about making mistakes, analyze friendships, imagine worst-case scenarios, and often put tremendous pressure on themselves to get things right. Beneath the overthinking are often some of their greatest strengths: thoughtfulness, empathy, insight, creativity, and a deep desire to do well and be a good friend.

Drawing primarily from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), participants will learn that the goal is not to eliminate anxiety, but to develop a healthier relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings. Rather than becoming stuck in worry, self-criticism, or fear of failure, girls will learn how to make room for discomfort, connect with what matters most to them, and take meaningful action even when anxiety is present.

Topics include overthinking and rumination, perfectionism and self-criticism, friendship stress and rejection sensitivity, embarrassment and social worries, school-related anxiety, emotional avoidance, managing uncertainty, self-compassion, identity, authenticity, psychological flexibility, and brave action.

Sessions combine discussion, experiential exercises, creative activities, mindfulness, reflection, and opportunities to connect with peers who often share similar experiences.

The goal is not to help girls worry less. The goal is to help them live more fully, confidently, and authentically, even when worry shows up.

This group is ideal for bright, sensitive, thoughtful girls who feel things deeply, think about everything, and sometimes get stuck inside their own minds.
